Harbor hospital is a 179 bed community hospital located in Baltimore. It is a private, not-for profit hospital focused on improving the health of the community they serve. I was able to spend 10 weeks working with the staff of three dietitians treating patients with a wide variety of conditions. Through my clinical rotation I was able to provide numerous nutrition educations, write tube feeding recommendations, and assess patients independently. I was also given the opportunity to partake in employee wellness programs including lunch and learns, cooking demos, and interacting with staff in the cafeteria.
Children's National Medical Center is a pediatric hospital that provides care to approximately 360,000 patients per year. They specialize in areas such as trauma, oncology, cardiology, critical care, neonatology, orthopedic surgery, neurology, and neurosurgery. I was able to spend four weeks in a variety of different settings increasing my knowledge on Cystic Fibrosis, diabetes, oncology, and critical care. This experience enable me to learn the differences between adult and pediatric care, and become skilled at the various calculations used in this populations for formula, ideal weight, nutrient needs, and many more.
